Between Earth and Light: The Journey of the ‘Mad German’ in Huelva

We delve into the exciting life of Friedrich Lehmann, nicknamed the “Mad German” in the fields of Huelva, Spain. But don’t let the nickname fool you, because behind that name is an experienced farmer and dreamer who has made permaculture and the connection with nature his banner.

Friedrich, or Federico as he is known in the region, takes us on a journey from his German roots to his love at first sight with Huelva in 1985. In love with the warm sunshine of Southern Europe, he decided to settle here. He bought the Jelanisol – Montebello estate, which at the time was little more than ruins on 50 hectares, and embarked on a journey to turn it into a haven of biodiversity and harmony with nature – as well as producing a wide variety of food.

Over the years, Friedrich not only restored the land, but also embraced organic, biodynamic and permaculture farming. It was not an easy road, he faced challenges and local scepticism, but his perseverance and passion led him to turn his farm into an oasis of life. Biotopes with natural hedges, aromatic flowers and ponds became some of the pieces of this agricultural jigsaw puzzle that shines with its own light.

Listening to Friedrich share the importance of growing “light-filled produce” – food that reflects its own luminous energy – it is impossible not to be infected by his inspiring spirit. In his view, humans are temporary guests of nature with whom we should collaborate, not as an exploitable resource (and on this point, Friedrich is blunt).

Through his focus on the connection between all forms of life, Friedrich calls for changing the collective mentality, finding inner peace and respecting ourselves as the first steps towards harmony with the environment. He reminds us of the importance of each small individual step in bringing about positive global change.
